The gallery I chose to attend was the Fodsick Nelson gallery. This was on January 28th to Feburary 22nd, 2015. It also had a reception with sculptural performances on January 30th, 7-9 pm. The exibitioin was created by D. Chase Angrier of Angrier Performance Works, in collaboration of Luftwerk, The tiffany Mills Company, Kristi Spessard, Laurel Jay Carpenter, Andrew Deutsch, and many more influential people. Each week they weave 8000 pounds of rice together, forming beautiful landscapes in a beautiful movement. Over the period of the Gallery they do performances and special events accompanying the exhibition. Their intention in this gallery was to show that the littlest things can make a piece of work. They really wanted to experiment with the rice and test what It can do. For one, it’s just rice. Not many people think about how to push that boundary with that and this gallery did.
I think this gallery was effective. It really gave me a new insight, and let me look more into the work, and rice, thinking about why use rice and why it was so important? I thought the idea was interesting, and it started to make me think about things. The fact that they also did live demonstrations really helped people visualize and process the thought more, making people think more about the process instead of what the item is. The only thing I think thy could improved on was broadcasting it more, so maybe there could have been a larger audience, and more people to appreciate this work.
One artist that Chase reminds me of is Richard Serra. Even though Serra worked with iron, they both have a object that they love to work with, and experiment with. Serra feels like without iron we wouldn’t have everything that we have today. That idea may be important, and with rice it may be on a shorter scale, but the idea can still be the same. Rice is evry important in some cultures, and with some, that’s one of their highest valued items. So even in the United States we may not feel that way, but to some it can be a big thing.
